DIYer (Hands ON) Wind Power

There’s few areas where it is easier to squander money than Wind Power.   It’s best to study the potential before you invest, there are countless places to learn about ‘your’ opportunity and you’ll find every sort of promise.

As with most things, isn’t it best to consult the man who has his hands all over it?  Two of the people I have followed for years are Hugh Piggott and Dan Fink. I’ll place some links below to help you get started in reality. Since they have considerable mastery of the topic, I’ll be brief and warn you of a few pitfalls.

Hugh and Dan can give you a lot of examples as to why you shouldn’t be impressed with peak power potential of the hardware. We should also understand that the assessment of potential at any given location right down to plus or minus a few feet can be very important. Your return on investment can have everything to do with initial cost and your ability to maintain the equipment, this gets into all kinds of considerations as per the basic design, and only the foolish ‘call the man’ to install it for them BEFORE they get the basic knowledge under their belt.  If you do it right, you may find a nice reward.  If you invest before you educate yourself, you may have a better opportunity to benefit by taking your money to Vegas and playing your favorite game in the Casino.

I like Dan’s page here as an intro primer to wind Power. http://www.otherpower.com/windbasics1.html

Hugh has significant experience, and there is much to learn here as well.  Question: who has more ‘hands on’ experience than Hugh? Answer: I don’t know.

http://www.scoraigwind.com/

Wind power for the off-grider or small scale wind power guy can pay, and in areas off grid where solar falls off to near nothing part of the year, this form of AE might supplement your power requirements, and reduce the number of hours you’ll run your generator.

Now let’s talk about Commercial wind power. Who do you find investing in wind power? Who are the power experts?

The power utility folks >are< the experts, some of them do exhaustive studies for five years or more before they decide on where to invest, they take a lot of things into consideration, existing emission laws, and cost of every kind including maintenance.  We don’t see power companies investing in wind power… why is that?  The answer…. “it likely doesn’t provide a return on investment”.  You see, that’s the way you keep a company from going bankrupt, they only stay in the game if they make a profit. Of course those who dispense propaganda will make them the villains, how dare them NOT invest in Alternative power! Fact is, Governments are not all that different from Companies in some respects, if they don’t make a profit, they don’t survive either.

Note Dan F’s overview and his mention of ‘SCAMS’.  His comments regard the commercial wind turbines marketed to individuals, but the large commercial wind turbines are ‘marketed’ to the most inept people of all.. Our Politicians, many if not most are easy prey.

Here in the State of Washington our Governor proudly announced that she had awarded a $5 million dollar Grant to an entity who will set up and operate a large commercial wind turbine on the West Coast of Washington State.  Our Governor is also responsible for several large wind farms installed in Washington that had a lot of opposition, she over ruled and these farms are now reality.  If these wind turbine projects are plauged with problems and never return a dime on the investment, who will be responsible?  Well, we know what politicians do, they all point fingers elsewhere, seldom is any failure or poor decision theirs.  IF we look at subsidies realistically, it is nothing other than a method to FORCE you to carry the investment and responsibility, (as the Citizen Taxpayer). It’s little different than other scams as the PIGs (animal farm) placed every kind of burden on the backs of other animals.

A quick mention of what the German Government did.  Some in their Government decided to offer a near 100% subsidy for Solar Panel and related equipment purchase. Their subsidy created a rather huge demand for panels and naturally the price of panels rose with the sharp demand. The overall effect?  People in other countries with far more solar potential  found themselves unable to realize a payback on the same equipment because the German subsidy had driven the price of the equipment unrealistically high.  If you look at the mechanics, this means that the German Government forced the German People (all of them) to invest at the highest price in recent times. You can buy the same panels for less than half the price now, and this slide started right after the German demand tapered off.

With the above example,  We note… a lot of people are giddy about wind power, there are plenty of investors, and why is it that Government doesn’t allow we citizens to invest in Wind Turbines as we choose? How different Politician’s behavior would be if we could hang them in the public square if the investments they force us to make fail.

Here in Washington State Our Governor and Senators, are infatuated with Wind Mills, it’s a very fashionable thing you know; an it’s hard to find Women who ignore fashion…… especially if it’s what they think will get them re-elected.  But…. we once had a Democrat Governor with a clear mind, and a passion for knowing the truth.  It’s worth your effort to review some of Governor Dixi Lee Ray’s quotes to realize how long we’ve been dealing with this insanity, and just how well she understood reality.  Beyond her deeds, we see that her best friend was a Dog, who needs further proof of her intelligence?

Quoting Dixie:
“We need to ask our policy makers and those we elect to office who are supposed to make decisions to give us the evidence of the facts that are behind the decisions that we make. We should be skeptical”.

Let us rejoice! yes, Dixie was a Scientist, and She understood the Value of being a skeptic, it is true that the Propagandists have put a lot of resorces into demonizing skeptics.  Of course Dixie understood that gullible people seldom make good decisions, nor do they cast the wise vote.

When I think Wind Mills, I naturally think of Don Quijote…

With all said,  I own a wind turbine, it’s my investment good or bad, and you don’t pay for my mistake, as I didn’t ask for any subsidy.

Here’s a must read book to consider:

http://www.amazon.com/Wind-Farm-Scam-Independent-Minds/dp/1905299834    read the reviews, and the Author’s background.

To study Wind Turbines further, make the time to study the WEB, Google the terms “Wind Turbine Scam” and “wind Turbine Hoax”.  If you think all the posts you find are about spoiling the fun, then we certainly can’t call you skeptical can we?

“I loved you Dixie”, it really was nice to have a Governor who was Stateswoman instead of a Politician.  She could have cared less about politics or her own re-election.  How disappointed she’d be in the leadership here today, likely just as disappointed as the Democratic party was in her….

All the best,

DIYer asks about his AVR in the ST style generator

Question for George:  Hi I live in North Queensland Australia, I found your site while trying to fix a problem with my generator.  The AVR died and I have been sent a new one that is not the same as the original so wiring mods are needed, problem is that the wiring diagram supplied with the unit is not compatible with the unit as the diagram has not got the AVR on it.  The generator is a Mindong st10, I wonder if you could help me out with  a wiring dia for the new AVR, it is an  EA15A. This is becoming a problem for me as we do not have grid power and rely solely on generator power much appreciated.

Gary A.

George’s Reply: Hi Gary, good news? I think your supplier has sent you a better AVR than what your unit was assembled with. How good it is, I don’t know, and hopefully, we’ll get some comment on this page.

My philosophy has caused me to avoid simple AVRs in the past because of the failure rates, few of these regulators have features built in that will allow the installer to limit field current, and some Simple AVRS will overdrive the field to the point where they destroy themselves or even the field. We need learn how good this EA15A is, and what we might add to it.

The ST is not the only generator supplied with simple AVRs, there are quite a few small generators that run out of fuel with a load on, and the AVR literally destroys itself or another component in the process. The operator refuels the gen set and finds the generator no longer works. I have also written about the destruction of a well pump coupling in a submersible pump caused by the generator running out of fuel. When I investigated that failure, I found a warning on the pump manufacture’s site that a generator running wild like they do ‘when’ they run out of fuel could destroy the pump coupling! This is a side note, and not a problem the AVR creates.

If your install is made best, (especially if you have a submersible well pump) you will consider a low voltage release as well. Many of us have run for years without the safeguards and we get away with it… “we’re gambling”, and the deeper that pump is down in the ground, the more we have at risk.

When running an AVR, You might eliminate some problems by placing a fuse or breaker in series with the field, this would keep a simple AVR from raising the current insanely high.

The new year is just a stones toss from here, 2011. Much of what I have written about the ST types to this point may be dated? I have seen that China has decided to have a different standard for exports, and this appears to give manufacturers the latitude to move away from the old standards that their government put in place to protect the Chinese people. Does this mean that China has joined India as per Quality Control, and the STs need be judged as individuals? some are very useful, some have problems I think.

It’s easy to google up “Voltage Regulator EA15A”, looks to be a universal regulator, and it looks far better than what I have seen in the past. How well they work might become a discussion on this page? How universal are they? I would really appreciate you sharing the outcome. Go back to your supplier for specific hook up information, I would be surprised if there is much more that a DC voltage supply in, and connection out to supply the field current to the brushes. Anyone out there have schemetics or more information on this unit?

Gary you send a sketch as to how the old AVR was wired in and why you think this one is different?

Seb in Mali (Dr F S Rodriguez-Sanchez)

Among his friends and colleagues he’s known as Seb (Sebastian). He’s a hard core hands on DIYer who knows what it’s like to be off grid.. I mean ‘really’ off the grid. We find DIYers on the Ranch, in Research, and everywhere in between.  Seb knows the Lister CS, his hands are all over it, and what he learned in Mali can be valuable to us all. The Mali Biocarburant study is and interesting read…  (links below). BTW, this is not the end of Seb’s studies, and his projects are not limited to bio-fuels, but are focused on improving the quality of life for people in third world countries through the application of technology.

Mali Project, Matt on left Visits Sebastian's Project, Seb on right

Picture to the Left is of Sebastian (on right). He and his group in this Mali field study hosted a visit of University of Columbia Students.  Matt Basinger from Columbia U is on the left and is fitting a modified CS plug for study.

Here’s a youtube link to an overview of the mail project.

A good link to Sebastian’s Work: http://sites.google.com/site/drfsrs/

In a recent conservation, Seb said he is now working with a Dutch organization ‘FACT’ where they are attempting to make use of innovative bio-digesters to partially fuel the Lister CS type engines. Seb mentioned that this will help increase the profitability of the Mali business model, but they have some work to figure out a cost effective metering system for the gas that will respond to engine load. A good thing to share at this point is FACT is looking at a business model overall, if they have an excess of vegatable matter that could be placed in the biodigester, they can use the gas and what’s left over is returned to the soil.  As I touched on before, this is about business and making a profit for the investors, this helps keep the project honest.

Seb is the Scientist, and not into the politics, I on the other hand will comment on the incredible amount of energy in a gallon of petrol and just how difficult it is to make an alternate fuel with similar energy density and shelf life.  Just today, I talked to a Mechanical Engineer in Eastern Washington who is off grid running 36 solar panels, he said he has far more energy than he can find a use for in the summer and near nothing in the winter. He was calling to see how he might construct an oil fueled small power plant that runs slow.  The reason I mention this is there are a lot of people who believe you could power a large factory with 36 panels…. winter or summer.  I think it’s imparative that we teach our children the value of energy, and make sure they don’t believe in the Hydrogen Propaganda. We see it everwhere, this week I see an oil company advertising the potential to increase overall efficiency of an automobile by 80% using hydrogen, now there’s a joke if I ever saw one.  Just sketch out the process from ‘energy in’, to the rear wheels turning, let’s blackboard the BTUs into the fuel processor, the losses in the drive system, the weight of the vehicle and the drag cofficient. My bet is the present Euro version 1.3 liter Suzuki Diesel is far more efficient…. sorry you can’t own it, because the EPA Czar says you can’t.  Hard to beat the energy density of oil,  a pound of kerosene or diesel. The Russians knew that years ago, that’s why they use kerosene to visit the space station.  If hydrogen was such a grand idea, wouldn’t they use it? I mean who cares what it cost to make, if it were a better fuel than kerosene, wouldn’t you use it? An 80% increase in efficiency might mean you can make one trip instead of two right? The simple truth is the power density is lower, and no one can afford to make the stuff, not for any use other than propaganda that is..

All the best,

George

Utterpower PMG Stolen

This could be fun, there’s  little chance the person who took a DIYer built generator powered by a small single cylinder Kubota and using one of utterpower’s early single voltage PMGs (120VAC only) realizes how unique it is!

It’s now a small world isn’t it? The unit is easily recognizable because it has green end bells, and a hollow shaft.  The  unit was taken from 8164 County Rd 192 Anderson, Texas. I’ll gladly pitch in on the reward, and so will the real owner. See it, got a cell phone, take a picture why don’t you?

Assistant Prof Pejman A and students at Manhattan College

Shown here is one of the early single voltage units, most of which were  distributed to research OR sold to hard core off gridders with the expectation I get feedback on performance. If you see one in Texas, please email george (at) utterpower.com

Thanks in advance for any help, and God bless Texas.

Wiki Leaks Gold! Damming? You be the judge.

If you haven’t discovered Joanne Nova’s website, It’s a good one to save and a good place to visit once in a while, I just visited it to see if she had picked up on the latest from wiki leaks. Sure enough, she’s got the news posted. While you’re there, consider buying her some chocolate with a small paypal donation, she’s an Ozzie Girl we can all appreciate.

http://joannenova.com.au/

Before I forget, UN climate chief Pachauri is in the news again, here’s a snippit “A year after Climategate, the IPCC’s Pachauri still refuses to face reality and clings to the deeply flawed 4th Assessment Report, which has been completely discredited over the past year after it was revealed that many of its supposedly “peer-reviewed sources” were actually based on activist reports and interviews with hikers.”  Yes, we know Pachauri was trained as an Engineer and worked on Railroads, I think there’s a job waiting for him in Rajkot, he might help the industry produce a balanced mechanical assembly in the slow speed industry.

And another one:

http://gatewaypundit.rightnetwork.com/2010/12/woah-wikileaks-documents-show-obama-administration-used-spying-threats-bribes-to-get-support-for-compenhagen-accord/

Now do you think they’re up to all this just to cool the planet one tenth of a degree over the next how many years? No way, it’s all about Cap and Trade and you being talked into surrendering every right to the Feds, or possibly even worse…  Ask the British how smart they feel about turning over decision making to Foreigners. But… we need note, the decision was made for the British people (EU participation), same as the decision for a healthcare plan that will bankrupt the USA was made by partisans in power for the moment.

It’s not that these Jackels took my right to order a new Lister type CS, it’s that they intend to take away every right;  “save my right to pay taxes”.

Maybe it’s time you watch this old classic for free? See how many characters you can recognize, do you see your naive friend who wanted to believe so badly? Maybe he still does? If you want to go pig hunting, there’s a lot of places to look. Head of the EPA, NOAA, NASA, IPCC?  You need limit your search to the ‘house’ that’s where they’ll be.

The Columbia University Study of Bio-fuels in the Lister CS.

Learn why we might all benefit from this work, but first I need give you some background.

left Sebastian, middle Mali Mechanic, right Matt

left Sebastian, middle Mali Mechanic, right Matt

Some years back, I got a call from Professor Modi at Columbia University asking me If I’d be willing to help them source an engine and other parts to put together a research power plant to study Bio-Fuels at Columbia.  No surprise to fellow DIYers, the Lister CS type was the engine under consideration. I found Vijay Modi to be a very warm and likable Man, he was born in India and has been to Gujarat and of course he knew of Rajkot and the slow speed engine industry established there. It took little time to get down to the task at hand and how I might help.

I volunteered to sit in on a conference call with some students where I learned of their plans to build what amounted to an elaborate Generator set with lots of data collection. In the beginning I was a little alarmed about what the students didn’t know about this engine, and I was concerned about safety issues.

At some point Vijay introduced me to Matt Basinger who was a Grad Student at the time. I found Matt smart as a whip, not a lot of hands on experience yet, but quick to grasp a concept and apply it.  As the project took root, the study of the Lister CS and the use of Bio-Fuels became the heart of Matt’s PHD Thesis. Soon other schools joined Columbia in bio-fuels research to form the ‘BELT’ program, and additional engines were placed in labs and a plan was put into place to collect and share information, Matt organized this effort as well.

I was getting a lot of good questions from Matt, and it wasn’t long and DIYers like Bill Rogers, Quinn Farnes, Bob Gayle, Phil Podkanowicz and others were meeting online to kick around Matt’s questions and attempting to provide him with quality feedback about our collective experience.

Matt had the fortune to travel out to Seattle, and I invited him to the Utterpower shop located up against the foot hills of the cascades.  It took me no time to recognize that DIYer personality, Matt is very much a ‘hands on guy’, and of course we know how important that trait is:-)  By the end of the first meeting, I knew Matt was one of us.

Part of Matt’s research took him to Entebbe Uganda, and I was able to arrange a meeting between him and DIYer Ron Pointier who flies for AIM AIR.  Ron’s Uganda home power is backed up with a British Built Lister CS, and he knows Uganda, and the Congo like few others.  It really is amazing how far and wide our DIYer, AE family reaches.  AIM Air is an Air Lines serving Mission work. Matt’s Father-In-Law works for an Air Lines supporting Mission work in Indonesia, so that was another bridge between the two of them.  As you might know, Missionaries are often great DIYers out of necessity, their reports of Small Bush Power Plants, what works, and what doesn’t are valuable.

Above:  Columbia University MFP Pilot Project Leader Alison Ferris Installs an Utterpower PMG in Uganda.  Alision is is a Mechanical Engineering Student, and a member of EWB “Engineers Without Borders.”

I found a facebook page for Columbia EWB, and here’s a picture of Alison!

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Engineers-Without-Borders-USA-Columbia-University/156469054399404#!/photo.php?fbid=183162708396705&set=pu.156469054399404&type=1&theater

One day Matt called about a trip to Mali. He was going to Meet ‘Seb’; who was working on a project there to grow Jatropha plants for bio-fuel production and place Multifunctional platforms for village use and a research project.  Dr. Francisco ‘Sebastian’ Rodriguez-Sanchez has a background in Materials, it wasn’t long and I was getting some data from this project that validated some of my own conclusions. I became far more interested and soon found myself reading Seb’s mission statement. I will forever link the word ‘veritable’ with Seb’s work, and any mention of the word brings a picture of Matt and Seb working together in Mali.

The value of the project IS measured according to it’s economic benefit to the village and ‘their’ ability to pay for the equipment deployed. How profoundly wise.  I could easily write 30 more pages about how impressive Seb’s mission statement is and why, but maybe that’s a story for Seb and Matt to tell?

Matt and Seb are focused on the science (as they should be).  I’m opinionated and very tired of seeing all the dishonesty in alternative energy and public money squandered. I am delighted to report this work is real according to my measure. At this moment, I see a lot of wind power going up and lots of Government subsidies are solely responsible for the investment! I’d bet that most of these machines will NEVER do more than transfer money out of the public coffers and into the pockets of those who have ‘engineered’ a deal and/or can make creative use of these subsidies.  The public looks on having no clue they are being fleeced, you need not agree.

The only honest measure of the value of tools or equipment is ‘economic benifit’, and even when we use these measurments , we have a plethora of liars and cheats who will skew data in order to make the money flow their way. Vijay, Matt, Seb, and many others are dedicated to making lives better in the third world and I believe they make every effort to measure benefit with honesty and accuracy. These men fully understand that deploying equipment into a village that can not be serviced or maintained could cost lives.

If you’ve read this far, you might be rewarded by reading the research papers Vijay, Matt, Seb and others have put together. Here’s a sample.

Basinger-Fuel-Article-1

As you look over this article, there’s all kinds of information and some innovative ideas Matt and Seb field tested. If you go back up to the picture of Seb and Matt (above), I think they were installing the modified COV plug as part of a field test in Mali.  Read about it in Matt’s paper.  Friend of Utterpower “Randy Allmand”, a very capable retired Areospace guy (and DIYer) took on the job of machining the plugs at low cost to Matt’s project.

Since the weather is keeping me out of the mountains, I hope to be posting more and it will be my goal and pleasure to tell you what Matt and Sebastian are up to today. These two are among the most impressive younger people I know.  Dr Matt, and Dr. Seb are both currently employed and doing scientific research in fascinating areas of AE.  Professor Modi knows talent when he see it..

My personal thanks to all who pitched in to help me locate parts, feedback, and Data to support Matt.

All the best,

George B.

Dallas Texas to auction cars off on Ebay?

recently posted, hope it’s true…

Get ‘em off the road WITHOUT making ‘em show proof of nationality. Wonder how the ACLU or the Justice Department will get around this one??
Dallas TX’s solution to Illegals…    Now somebody’s put their thinking cap on !!!!

Recently, in the City of Dallas, Texas, they passed an ordinance that if you are pulled over by law enforcement and not able to provide proof of insurance, your car will be towed right away. Afterwards, to retrieve your car after being impounded, you must require proof of insurance to have your car released. This has made it easy for the City of Dallas to remove uninsured cars that are typically driven by mostly illegals.  Shortly after “No insurance” ordinance was passed, the Dallas impound lots began to fill up quickly and was full after nine days. Most of the impounded cars were driven by illegals. Not only must you provide proof of insurance to have your car released, you have to pay for the cost of the tow, a $350 fine, and charged $20 for every day their car is kept in the lot. I would suggest other cities across the nation follow what Dallas is doing. Not only is it getting uninsured drivers off the road, but it is taking away vehicles driven by illegals that have no insurance.

        Brings tears to my eyes…

Important DIYer Topics, Hydrogen and AGW

AGW and Hydrogen,  these are important topics as it relates to our DIYer projects and experimentation.

SkyDragonSlayers

The truth is always relevant, DIYers are generally better at critical thinking and they are also far more skeptical of advertised claims.  Why? Likely because DIYers  don’t just read, they put their hands all over stuff and generally have a deeper understanding of the topics they study.  For those of us with life experience, we know the opposite of ‘skeptical’ is ‘gullible’.   Another interesting note,  Find the person who willingly accepts Al Gore’s version of AGW at face value,  and you’ll generally find a person who has his hands in his pockets most of the day, or you find he or she is still living with their parents and they have little practical experience.

I’d like to mention Hydrogen for a moment,  it’s a great example.  The topic is enormously attractive, and just the mention of it in an advertisement can make it memorable for a large segment of the targeted audience. Take for instance an Ad running on TV this month by an oil company where they suggest that their developments might lead to a gain in efficiency of 8o percent. Wouldn’t you like to study their calculations!   Many of us noted GW Bush ‘knuckled under’ and supported Hydrogen Research once he understood how politically charged Hydrogen is. Telling the truth about it could lose you a lot of votes (no matter what party afilliation) made by those who will never know the difference between an IOU and a BTU.

The simple truth is… We need a lot of energy to make a little hydrogen. When we create the hydrogen, we often generate more emissions not less, AND we suffer a >huge< loss in efficiency because Hydrogen is never the principle product in the conversion necessary to create hydrogen. Some suggest using solar power, but many will never see a return on their investment no matter how efficiently they use the energy produced.  hydrogen production just compounds the economics problem 4 times or more.  We are often creating far more emissions creating the hydrogen only to brag about how clean the process is when we burn thy hydrogen.  This doesn’t faze the ignorant.  Our elected leaders know the power of the word ‘hydrogen’ They know it’s an easy way to transfer money from the public coffers…. just tie it to hydrogen research in an earmark and there’s never a question.  The general public will normally praise the expense regardless of how well Bureaucrats understand it doesn’t pay.

AGW  promises to be a far larger drain on the public coffers, and it could  surrender more of our freedoms than some seem willing to understand.  Our children are not fully aware of how often Chicken Little’s book “the sky is falling” has been plagiarized over the past 6000 years.

Here’s a chance to get a clearer picture.  This book was written  outside organizations that owe their existence to politics and those who would become rich and or powerful  if we all signed up for the Alarmist’s program to cripple the west and starve the third world.

My thanks to those who have passed on ‘sucking the public teat’, and dare to tell the truth in this book.

http://www.slayingtheskydragon.com/meet-the-authors

Try an experiment, make notes of those you know who are giddy about hydrogen power. Politely steer them into conversation about conventional energy and typical losses in energy conversion.  More often than not, you’ll find a person who has never been trained to add up the losses, fact is…. many of these people would be interested in buying that little device that makes more energy than it consumes when you offer it to them.  Now try the same thing with the people you know who ring their hands over global warming and have the date on the calendar circled when we all perish. What do they really know about our natural world, let them tell you.

All the best,

George B.
