Jerry Bartlett (Crazy Jerry) top honors in Mileage contest.

If you are a friend of Utterpower, you’ve heard the name Jerry Bartlett more than once.

Jerry recently shared with me that he was making good progress in getting a car ready for a high mileage contest and the results are in!

Before you read the coverage, I want to mention the Triumph spitfire, few people will know what a light weight this car is (was) till you start tearing into it. Maybe 30 years ago, a friend attempted putting a Ford Pinto engine in a spitfire, and it seemed that half the engine was above the hood line! It is no wonder the spitfire was chosen for a lightweight high mileage chassis.

Do note that Jerry donated his prize money for his win.  That’s no surprise to me, and I’d bet that most all of Jerry’s friends know that money is not what motivates Jerry to do what he does.

Congratulations Jerry, the car looks great, and obviously does more than you set out to do!

Jerry Bartlett, one of my favorite AE DIYers, hands on is where it’s at.

The Mother of Automation?

screwed

screwed

The SeaTac $15 minimum wage.

The SeaTac $15 minimum wage.

Quote: The mother of Automation is the Higher Cost of Labor.

George B. 2014

No… you shouldn’t expect the cocksure to ever figure this out.. especially Socialists like Kshama Saywant and my Washington State Senators to mention a few.

If you haven’t been following Seattle’s City Council Socialist Kashama Saywant, you are missing a good show.  Her goal is to raise the Minimum wage For Seattle to $15 an hour. This WILL literally destroy a lot of small business because the business model they are founded on will not work with the higher cost of labor. Saywant has no sense of business, which allows her to operate within the utopian business plan.

Bill Gates is a liberal in many if not most ways, but he warns of what’s ahead.  all I attempt to share here is Saywant unwittingly accelerates what WILL happen, and that is… a superior hamburger will be made by automation soon. Saywant’s efforts just makes it happen soonest.

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/03/13/bill-gates-says-neither-people-nor-governments-are-prepared-for-the-huge-changes-coming-to-the-labor-market/

But perhaps even as obtuse, are my Senators,…… one should know better…

All the best,

George B.

PS… I claim the Quote on Automation, it’s been going on since the wheel, but it’s possible we see more changes in a month, than some saw in a lifetime.

Email of the Month?

Main-Switch

Cool looking old switch I found in the bowels of a Seatle Building.

I don’t think it can get any better than this, you can read this from bottom up to get the conversations from first to last email..

There have been numerous qualified electrical engineers who have vetted this unit.
If you can’t figure it out then don’t reply. If you want a challenge then try to duplicate it.
Go to :  www.witts.ws and see for yourself.
The first time I saw this I thought, like you, it was BS. I researched it and found that over unity is possible. Just for a moment take the blinders off, blinders are a shortcut to thinking.

The Second Amendment At Work?

A Darwin Award in the making?

Our new Healthcare

Big Government Always turns out good.

We know how the human brain works, people develop a belief and then do everything possible to dismiss evidence as to why they could be wrong,  and inventory every bit of evidence as to why they are right!  Be honest… we all do it to some extent.

In the news is one of the truly dumb things I’ve read so far this year. Law enforcement Officers dumb enough to enforce a ‘no knock’ break down the door arrest warrant in a State that gives it’s Citizens a very clear right to use deadly force to protect themselves WHEN they are confronted in such a way.  Especially in the classic situation where your brain is processing in a ‘fight or flight mode’.

There’s nothing funny about the loss of life, but there will be people who think these officers should be up for one of the Darwin awards of 2014.

For those of us who are thoughtful, should this single event be a reminder to all Law Enforcement as to what orders they should refuse to enforce? It certainly doesn’t matter what I think, but it may be about life or death IF the Officers don’t think it through.

We really do need know how the human brain is wired, and the mechanics of fight or flight, and how it has been developed over the course of thousands of years to keep you from being a meal. If it works properly, you don’t stop and think, it’s more like a program that’s auto executed.

In my mind, this is  a clear sign of over reach, and it might test a few of my friends that are anti gunners, and even anti second amendment. They pretty much hate the Cops too, choosing to harbor the events where they are Bullies, and to forget about the good deeds they do.  I have every confidence that they will rationalize it all in their minds, but how?  Will they think their obedience, or how they vote will keep this from happening to them?

In my mind this is EXACTLY what the second Amendment is all about, It should be in the mind of LOAs and Crooks at all times, it is part of the purpose for such a well thought out law.

As for those who wring their hands over any gun death.. and say it is the worst thing they can imagine. They are the same ones who can read about starving children eating weeds, they can watch just over the fence, as mad men club to death whole families and bury them in a ditch.  They can watch it all, and then tell you it can never happen in our back yards, and you are only a loon to think it.

It’s my thought that they think their superior minds can really create that utopia on earth that never has been.

G.

Real Changfa Brand 195s for sale

Real Changfa Brand 195s  for sale:

As a service, I thought I’d share there are two brand new (in the crate) 195s in Western Montana for Sale.

Over the years, I’ve watched a lot of the imported Chinese Horizontals, and the problems.  There certainly were batches of engines to avoid, and others quite good. Some engines had some internal plastic parts known to fail, others did not have pressure reliefs on the output side of the oil pump, easy to test for, and easy to fix.

Why are these for sale? Mac bought a number of engines back then, and like many of us, he realizes it’s time to reduce the stock piles, we are long on projects, short on space, shorter still on years left. And it’s time to get rid of some of the surplus.

Mac is asking $895 for the engines, and is wanting best offers as well. No reason you can’t use comments here to Ask questions.

I’ve known Mac for a good many years… I’d trust him with my Dog or my Wallet, he’s an off gridder, and a very talented man, I’m sure there’s some pictures of his place on my CD. His place is one of my all time favorite off grid visits. I bet he could charge admission just to see some of the amazing things he’s done.

The 195s make around 12HP at 1800 RPMs, you can turn them up to 2200 if you need more horsepower.  Many have been used to drive 1800 RPM (4 pole) heads directly. The standard set ups are belt driven, and there’s a pulley and tool kit included with the Changfas. Extra head gasket, and more. These are electric start me thinks..

If you have my CD, there’s plenty of reading on the cast iron Changfas. This is not a quiet engine, but few will give you more grunt. Like the Lister, it’s a simple engine, but the 195 has a balance shaft, and runs quite smoothly.

Noel Douglas is one of my best resources for reports on long term use. He received a batch of engines with some bushings NOT aligned with their oil feed holes last year.  This particular batch (Mac’s Engines) came off a seasoned assembly line with good oversight.

Plenty on the CD, and I do have some of those special $28 banjo  fittings that make it easy to plumb in an oil filter on this engine, you buy one of these, and I’ll gift one fitting for the cost of shipping ($1).

Mac’s number X406A-V360-M3254   yes you will have to ignore the Alpha characters, as they’re here to confuse machines that read my pages. I get no commission on sale, I only post to help Mac out, and perhaps help one of you find a good 195?

Forrest Mims, one of my favorite writers.

Here’s a link, lots of fun listening to Forrest talk about the early days.

As I once wrote, Forrest is the best technical writer I know, reading his books is like pouring knowledge directly into your brain. He’s changed more lives than he’ll ever know..

The Kshama Sutra

Some never realize they're fucking themselves till it starts to hurt.

Some never realize they’re fucking themselves till it starts to hurt.

Politics and Satire? Kshama seems perfect for Seattle. This page is only a monument. It’s your job to search for the rest of the story, and interpret it as you wish.

Added Note:

After posting this, I received the following email, I do enjoy Indian History, and very much enjoy the helpful advice and info I receive about India and her rich history.

“Good One! BTW did you know that the meaning of the Sanskrit word kshama is SCARCITY if it is pronounced as kshAAma and PATIENCE if pronounced as kshama? Since the English language gives no clue to how to pronounce it, I guess the pronunciation with the elongated “AA” is more appropriate!”

So I guess the KshamaSutra  (the name I give her plans) may just be an appropriate name for Seattle someday?

The KamaSutra is about far more than western people might think at first.  The KshamaSutra appears to be a rather unique name and it’s my hope that it will stick to her as well as stink does to dog poop.  Kshamasutra is really about ‘doing it to yourself’, and all who might be ignorant enough to follow..

As you might know, There are a number of reasons that search engines might store information, and content is one of them. If you are as offended as I am by Kshama Sawant, perhaps you’ll point to this page from elsewhere? If you decide to comment on this page, please use the name Kshamasutra or kshama Sutra, or both in that comment.

Scarcity?  I really do think Sawant is capable of leaving a stink, but we’ll see how much of a scar her stink makes.

Capitalisim is evil she says, and the Boeing Machinists should seize Boeing property and make things other than war machines? You need google up this socialist.

Behold the KshamaSutra!

The SeaTac $15 minimum wage.

The SeaTac $15 minimum wage.

Radical Marxist Kshama Sawant ‘Occupies’ A Seattle City Council Position.

There’s really no need for me to link all the stories in this day and age.  Kshama makes it known how important youth is in her politics, it’s Seattle youth, the homeless, and the jobless,  and a touch of Fairy dust that has brought her to office.

Just the other day, she found a great photo op, and took advantage of the Boeing Machinists. She’s seen with them, fists raised in Solidarity!

Seattle is a lefty city, but according to the KshamaSutra (my name for Her Radical Teachings) The Seattle City Council, and everyone holding office in the State Are far to the right.

She’s suggesting the Machinists take over Boeing property if their jobs leave! Telling them they can make useful things like transit buses instead of war machines.

To occupy Boeing’s property and use it? So odd a Woman wouldn’t think of herself being used in a similar way.. without her permission.

http://blogs.seattletimes.com/northwestvoices/2013/11/20/kshama-sawant-will-have-trouble-changing-ingrained-inequities/

My crystal ball suggests that the name I’ve given her cause and following “The KshamaSutra” will come to be all about fu__ing  yourself. It may take some time for the word to spread.

Do a few searches you’ll find plenty to read..

An Important Muse? Nov 11 2013

Martian-Marxist

My Favorite Martian, Your favorite Marxist?

How many alarms do you hear in the background?

If you are Hands on, most of what I post might make sense.  If your hands have no stains or lack a single callous, then you’re likely going to find nothing but contempt for what is shared here.

We see our President surround himself with CARBON copies of himself, no hands on experience, no business, no mechanicals, nothing outside the .EDU or twisted politics.

We see who was put in charge of building that obamacare website, you will need work hard to rationalize that it was any more than stuffing the pockets of political allies, and done by people who have no clue about the shear complexity of what needed to be done.

DIYers, this is your call to action, time to organize your own house. It is a clear sign that stealing the public’s purse and using it to assure a single party government remains in place is the top priority. You’ve watched the efforts to divide the public by race, religion, income, and more, Have you ever seen an effort made by top leadership in the last 5 years to unite us?

We have learned from experience how important it is to seek the advice and help of others who have the skills necessary to make realistic assessments in what we attempt to do. In the corner of my shop are projects that remind me of the skills I lack, it’s important for a man to know his limitations.

It’s been an Interesting few weeks, I’ve wanted to thank the Russians and the French for helping to preserve American freedoms. But now, I need thank the Poles too! As Pelosi waits for the Website to come up (so  >she< can learn what’s in it),  others play candy crush, and some citizens  with real hands on experience wonder….

Would Atlas himself have tried to lift all of American Healthcare? It’s bigger and more complex than all American Government does now.  But if your representatives don’t read what they vote for, how would they ever know?

Thank you Poles, you have history lessons fresh in your mind and know what a good screwing looks like.

http://www.cfact.org/2013/11/12/cfact-rallies-50000-poles-against-climate-treaty/

We all wonder where the safety net is? When will we wake up? Some of the most hands on and informed say the net is reality, and when there is no money left to buy those free lunches, we can attempt to reclaim reality as so many in the past have.

If you are willing to give up your soul, you can turn the world upside down. I expect my Grand Children to read about it, and to ask… Just what the hell were our parents thinking? That’s exactly the questions children in Europe asked of their parents.

The only thing that does make sense is that the President and his friends think they are taking you on a journey from which you can not return.. and there’s a chance they’re right. The only question that remains, will those who have supported the transformation of America realize that they have nearly outlived their usefulness? Are they smart enough to grasp that they are in the process of surrendering any say they might have in what and how government governs?

As we watch government swing the hammer and hit our thumb in healthcare. The EPA is swinging a far larger hammer, and they are aiming at our head! What’s wrong with America? People like my Senator Patty Murray who believes in fairy dust.  A woman who will watch the world be unraveled, and hold her tongue. One of many who have sold their souls for a position of power,  and the story will be told in the history books.

Watts in your Gen Shed?

A great and handy reference for the basics

Build your Independence

Just thought we could have a thread where folks can list what equipment they have put together for their off-grid systems. It may also be educational to know what appliances are used. I’ll start with my stuff.

We live on 1 acre that we had cleared in a rainforest at 1800′ alt.
The average wind speed is 7mph, so no wind turbines here.
Our annual rain fall is 200″. Winter temps are 55°F – 70°F Summer 65°F – 80°F.
Humidity is a pretty consistent 80%
System:
1880 watts of PV controlled by Outback MX60
8 x S530 Rolls Surette 6V batteries strung in series/parallel at 24V
Xantrex TR3624 charger/inverter 3600 watt (square wave)
Kill a Watt CT50:5 metering
Listeroid Metro 6/1 with Utterpower 3K PMG (cooled with Honda radiator and box fan)
We fuel the 6/1 with UVO that we heat to dry out then filter and cut with 10- 20 % Virgin RUG
Yamaha EF2000is ( Fueled with Non-ethanol 89 octane gasoline with 1 oz./ 5 gal TCW3)
Changfa 6 Hp turning a 3K st head (currently fueled with Locally produced Bio-diesel)

Our hot water is supplied by a cheap propane fired Eccotemp L5 on demand water heater
Refrigeration is a 5.cubic foot chest freezer converted with an external thermostat.
Our water is just caught rain water the we treat with chlorine tablets
Water pump is a 3/4hp w/ 5 gallon pressure tank
Lighting is all CFL

Electricity costs on the Big Island fluctuate with fuel prices I think it is about 40- 50 cents / Kwh
Propane is about 4.80 / gallon
