Utterpower CD

The Utterpower CD is a collection of Articles, Pictures, Videos and more.  The majority of the information is targeted towards our DIYer community and our love of Alternative Home Power Solutions.  At the heart of the CD is Information about the Lister type CS and variants, but that is just the beginning, there is plenty of information about Asian Horizontals, and other engine applications.  Cooling Systems, Drive systems, Alternative Fuels, and more.

An example article covers three DIYer starters I have personally built and tested with large flywheel type engines.  Below is a picture (one of three) starters DIYers can easily build. This particular one is made by grafting on the magnetic clutch and pulley assembly taken off of a junk  auto air conditioning compressor. The starter is the ultra plentiful Chrysler gear reduction starter fitted to millions of six cylinder and V8 engines over many years.  Remember, the key is to use parts plentiful in your home market, so if you’re an Ozzie, or Kiwi; it may a be similar part, but different.

More about the picture of the utterpower Starter above: This is a picture of one starter I installed and tested on a DIYer Lister 6/1_St5 generator that started the 6/1 engine turning it over like it was running full rated speed!  Notice, this was put together from common jumk yard parts.  It’s an example of one of three DIYer starters George has fabricated and tested shown on the CD.  Yes, there’s several other starters friends of utterpower have shared with us, and we need give the Old Engine folks credit for many ideas that go back more than 100 years.

Note dated 11/12/2010 I have been made aware that several orders have not been filled in a timely manner, this was caused by an illness in our utterpower friends and family community, and I will be handling requests for books and CDs directly until we are able to offer a more elegant method.  You should expect a reply and a status within three days WHEN you provide an email address.  If you don’t get it, please send me and email at george(at)utterpower.com or use the contact form. I hope I have found and changed or deactivated other pages that instruct you to do somthing different.

It’s important to know that the CD is designed to be browsed, not popped in a media player and watched. There are a lot of common file formats most of you have experience with. They include .pdf, .jpg, .mov, .txt, .doc and more. There are video clips, word documents, and a lot of pictures. Lots of notes on gen frame building, cogen, lister type notes, chinese horizontal notes, and a collection of stuff off gridders and experimenters will likely enjoy. Many have commented that the article on rebuilding  a fuel injection pump, or the article on prepping an Indian made Lister type was worth many times the price and saved a lot of money. Although the disk is organized by topic and there are individual folders for topics like ‘lister types’ for instance, the newer operating systems allow you to search the CD by your topic of interest. Enter “pulley” in your OS search box, and you’ll get a list of files that discuss the topic of pulleys.

Some years ago I wrote and article called Listeroid Longevity, according to many readers, this article is packed with good advice and has become a popular guide to survey a Lister type giving detailed information about what to look for and how to correct it.  It’s  imperative that you make these inspections before you put your engine into service.  I have received many emails over the years thanking me for the time to write this article, readers are certain that what they learned saved them a lot of money and frustration.

A second article I put together was a cooperative effort between myself and JB Shah of Lovson.  JB did a lot of leg work, and took some excellent pictures of the involved process of making these legendary engines.  He also wrote some on the history of the Indian efforts to build parts and eventually complete engines.  Expect to see some really nice pictures of the foundry work; loading the furnace, mold making, pouring molten cast into the molds, machine work and more.  JB and I worked together on this  article because we could find little infomation on the topic. Thank you JB for your efforts, this one and more!

After a few years off Adding content to the basearticles, the Utterpower CD was born, and we have been adding information ever since! If content grows larger, we will be forced to move it to a DVD format.

Expect to find: illustrations of wooden frame construction, steel frame construction,  DIYer’s projects,  manuals from India and elsewhere, piles of pictures, information and fabrication of generators based on Chinese horizontals, ST generators, DIYer designed starters for Lister Types, wiring, information and diagrams on cooling tanks, DIYer radiators, and many ideas from friends of utterpower in other parts of the world.  There’s a few old movie clips including an excellent one that Shell Oil put together covering the research and development of the modern diesel. It’s interesting to note, I am rewriting this page on 11/12/2010, yesterday I was talking to a friend that is attempting to work with the EPA on some exemptions for CHP research, when he mentioned the prime mover was going to be a diesel, the EPA Bozo said he was disappointed and shared his disdain for diesels! Imagine, and engine that can achieve over 52 percent thermal efficiency, and this guy at the EPA has no appreciation for it? Most who understand diesels know there is a good reason why the majority of the Maritime fleet is diesel powered and why every major railroad uses diesel power. Who could afford to run the next best thing? ever wonder why the railroads don’t use Jet Turbines, gasoline, propane, natural gas, steam, bloom boxes, whirling magnets? MIT predicted the diesel is our best bet over the next 40 years and I believe… Yes, among our elected officials; you’ll find the mechanically challenged… and those who believe in every kind of magic, just another reason for you to consider being more self sufficient.

There’s barely room on the CD for the US Navy’s training course on generator therory and more. You’ll be busy for a few days,  plenty of folders, jpegs, PDFs, drawings, articles on hompe power production, CHP, off grid living and more.

Somewhere is a page of testaments, but here’s one I got yesterday, 12/3/10

“The Cd… WOW!!! So much information!!! A lifetime accumulation of knowledge!!!”
Thanks again!!!
George B.

Update 1/20/12 CD is full! I decided to remove a folder of old iron shows across the country to make room for other information, of possible interest to you is an old manual converted to a PDF file of Arrow Singles. I was told by a friend of Utterpower that this was printed around thirty plus years ago, no copy rights found, no warnings not to reprint.  The old Arrows were designed to run a long time unattended, and this manual has a lot of good info as to what works off grid.. I love those big ole tapered rollers they used on the crankshafts. Arrows are reportedly expensive to rebuild, but few would argue their merit. A handy way to study how this engine was built, and the companies’ reccomenteded service intervals are of great interest to the die hard stationary engine fan.

I would like to order your CD and book together. Please tell me how and how much. I am currently building a woodgas generator set with a Ford inline 6 and a 25 kw ST generator head.
    Thank-you

There should be plenty of info on this page now regardign ordering, see the book page for book and CD combo..I have a lot to leanr abotu this, but a shoppign cart is in my future.. comments will certainly help me tune the page.
TJ, that 300 CID Ford is a real good Engine. I’d attempt to find where the engine makes good torque and run RPM low as reasonable. You are working with a VERY low BTU gas, so unless you supercharge, you need some cubic inches to make decent power (I think). I have been frustrated by the emails kicked out by GEK and others where it is obvious there is talent in the group enough to fab up some pretty nice looking stuff, but no real interest in the group(s) as per measured performance data. I would think folks would be interested in how much tinkering you need do over the course of an hour, and what kind of load measured in KW we might place on the generator for an hour. The peaks are nice to know, the minimum output over the course of an hour or so will allow us to acess what we might use it for practical application wise. Please come back and share your experience!

    George,
I ordered the book & CD in mid-October rec’d promply. Thank you. I have problems
with CD, it won’t play on several devices & my computer geek thinks it appears to be
defective. How is best way to fix? Bruce B 1458 Anyroad TN. Thanks for all your work in making us more energy efficient. BB

    • George B. says:

      HI Bruce,
Thanks for writing, I am attempting to add more to this page so folks know what to expect of the CD, when you say ‘play’ the alarms go off here. The first thing you should do is mount the CD and then browse it like any other folder based file system on your computer. See if you can read the readme.txt file first. As you may know, we DIYers attempt to get our money out of stuff, and some of us have CD drives that won’t read some very popular CD disk formats used today! There’s nothing exotic on the CD at all, many common file formats, .jpg, .txt, .pdf, and more.. If your geek friends can’t browse the folders in a CD or DVD drive made in the last 8 or more years, there’s a problem. I’ll gladly send you a second CD if you tried that.

I can’t assist you much.. there’s always the oldengine.org group, and there’s usually soemone there that can guide you.. As for trouble shooting small diesels, it’s all pretty much the same. Injection pumps, looking at the spray pattern, learning what a good ‘clink’ sounds like.

  4. Dan F. says:

    Hi George-
The CD arrived today and all I can say is WOW. Probably the most worthwhile investment I could have made as a Lister newbie. For anyone on the fence about parting with your hard earned money, this compilation pays for itself. I especially enjoyed the super secret “Rocket Boy” bonus feature :)
    Dan F.

    • George B. says:

I am totally impressed you found that bonus feature, very few do! Thanks for the positive feedback. I’d like to mention an emal I received today, a non-DIYer complains that some supports rattled loose on his radiator cooled Lister 6/1 with water pump fitted. He goes on to say that a local welder told him that things wouldn’t have fallen apart had there been more than a tack weld holding the work together. Dan, I’m sure you understand that a DIYer surveys a piece of equipment before he runs it, and the design he mentions is >EXACTLY< what I suggest was designed to fail. A few hours of reading can save countless hours fixing, or perhaps avoiding a trip to deliver your previous treasure to the scrap heap. Whatever can be mounted off the engine frame will be off the engine frame in stationary applications, that is if you want to reduce the number of failures.

George, At long last I have my 10/1 JKson mounted safely on my 6″ I beam mounts which rest on McMaster-Carr HD vibe pads which is them J-bolted to my 3,500# concrete pad. I started placing you water-hose adapters on the block when someone made off with the thermostat housing you sold me for the NAPA 195 thermostat. In short, I am short a housing and need to send you $$$ for a replacement. How much, sir and many thanks. Graham C. Andoe
