Q
Counter Balance Shafts
George, You talk about the Chinese engines having two counter balance
shafts, which makes them run with less vibration. I am not familiar with
that terminology. I have seen crankshafts with weight opposite of the rod
throw which I would call a counter balance, but have no idea what a counter
balance shaft (let alone two) would look like. Could you elaborate a little
more or point me to a link with a picture. Thanks, Bill Porter
A Hi Bill, Reference clock hours....With the crank pin at 3 O'clock in a vertical engine, or 12 O'clock in this horizontal, how effective is the crank counterbalance at canceling vibrations caused by both the reciprocating mass of the piston AND the Counterweighted crank shaft? When these two weights are exactly opposite, there can be a balance, at all other points of rotation and reciprocation; the effectiveness of the simplistic design is lost or diminished. The addition of a coupled shaft can be used to 'counter' these imbalances to a far greater extent.
The following link may be helpful in
your understanding. Counterbalance shafts have been around for many
years, lots of 4 banger auto engines use them. The following site may
explain it better.

I hope this helps in your
understanding. The counter balance can make all the difference in
longevity.
Q Electric Starter How do I wire up the Chinese Starter? A See the below picture and drawing, this is very much a copy of what GM and others have done for years.
All the best,
George B.
